Toolkit for K-5 Division

Big Picture Plan

The goal of Youth Tide is to create a simple and accessible toolkit that helps children understand and cope with the emotions they experience in response to their environment whether at school, at home, or elsewhere. The toolkit will include materials like storybooks that reflect real-life situations children can relate to, cards that introduce common problems along with calming strategies like breathing exercises, and practical items such as stress balls and fidget bracelets that offer support in everyday moments. The purpose of these kits is not only to provide comfort, but also to help children build emotional awareness, strengthen their coping skills, and feel more in control of their experiences. Over time, the kits aim to foster resilience and give children the tools to better communicate their feelings, manage stress, and develop a sense of self-understanding and safety.

With the lower age youth in mind, a project we at YouthTIDE designed has come forth within the Elementary Toolkit, a toolkit designed for beginner level literacy and trauma management. With multitudes of tools such as our specially designed trauma scenario cards, cards designed by our team with 37 unique subtle trauma scenarios with elementary youth in mind, we provide advice on management on the backside, and practical application for the youth to partake in. DIY stress toys, a fun activity for the youth to create that engages their attention with information surrounding stress management, and a custom designed coloring books, 3 different variants for the youth to enjoy. These stories are based around trauma scenarios we created, illustrated by local children's book authors that convey a message and applicable advice for the youth to utilize in order to combat the negative stigma around mental health, and misconceptions behind trauma.

Our Mission

For much too long, public perception and understanding of the word Trauma has been limited to extreme, highly visible and loud cases. This narrow perception has created a dangerous blind spot we at the Global Initiative Alliances have recognized-countless youth and members of the public experience what we call “everyday trauma” that go unrecognized. These experiences include parental divorce, emotional neglect, chronic family conflict, academic pressures, economic instability and more that are commonly perceived by the public as simple problems that may be viewed as ordinary on the surface, yet their cumulative impact on developing minds may be profound. The misconception that trauma must be catastrophic and loud to be valid has left a foundation for a generation of youth to struggle in silence, issues minimized or dismissed as part of a growing experience.
